Read the Lesson

Demonstrating compassion, welcome, and forgiveness in all relationships β€” including with people who have special needs β€” is a biblical calling. Prayer and fasting are spiritual disciplines that help cultivate these virtues in our lives.

Compassion: Show empathy and care for others, bearing their burdens and meeting their needs. Through prayer, we can seek God's heart and ask Him to develop in us a compassionate spirit. Scripture: Matthew 9:36; Colossians 3:12; 1 Peter 3:8; Ephesians 4:32.

Welcome: Embrace hospitality and welcome others with open arms, showing kindness and acceptance β€” including those with special needs. Scripture: Romans 15:7; 1 Peter 4:9; Matthew 25:35; Hebrews 13:2; Galatians 3:28.

Forgiveness: Extend forgiveness and grace to others, just as God has forgiven us. Regular prayer helps us surrender our hurts and grievances to God. Scripture: Matthew 6:12, 14-15; Ephesians 4:31-32; Colossians 3:13.

Understanding and Empathy: Pray for eyes to see others through God's eyes, leading us to approach them with compassion and care. Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4; 1 Peter 3:8; Romans 12:15.

Sensitivity and Patience: Fasting cultivates sensitivity to the needs of others, as it temporarily sets aside our own desires and focuses our attention on God and others. Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; James 1:19-20.

Spiritual Strength and Renewal: Regular fasting helps us develop spiritual strength and endurance, equipping us to extend compassion, welcome, and forgiveness in our relationships. Scripture: Isaiah 40:31; 2 Corinthians 4:16; Ephesians 6:10-11.

Inclusion and Support: Value the participation and contribution of all individuals, ensuring they feel included and supported. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:22-26; Romans 12:4-5; Galatians 3:28.

Advocacy and Care: Stand up for the rights and well-being of individuals with special needs, advocating for their inclusion and providing care. Scripture: Proverbs 31:8-9; James 1:27; Luke 10:25-37.

Kindness and Gentleness: Demonstrate kindness, gentleness, and a spirit of humility in all interactions. Scripture: Ephesians 4:32; Galatians 5:22-23; Colossians 3:12.

Encouragement and Support: Offer words of encouragement, support, and affirmation to uplift and strengthen others. Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Hebrews 10:24-25; Romans 15:1-2.

Demonstrating compassion, welcome, and forgiveness requires a sincere heart and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. As followers of Christ, we are called to love one another as He has loved us.
